DISABILITY UNIT - PASSION PROJECTS

Song Writing

Unit_1_Mobile_.jpg

For our Song Writing Passion Project, students have chosen to either compose a song in a style of their choice, or compose music to accompany a film clip.

We started the term by researching the features of different styles of music to give students some inspiration for their own work, and learning how to select and use samples on Mixcraft.

Students have now started to compose their own pieces, and it has been amazing to see their creativity and developing ICT skills. We can't wait to hear their finished products!

Recycling

Recycling is the name of the game! My Passion Project group are focusing on the economically friendly project of recycling.

Each student has chosen an area of recycling they are most interested to focus their project on. One of the focus area is e-waste to learn how unwanted electronic goods that are sent to landfill but the better way to recycle these unwanted goods to have a new life.

A few students have chosen to investigate how we can better recycle our general waste of plastic and glass within the school with the aim of installing special bins to collect these products to properly recycle these products at our local Pooraka Bottle and Can Recycling Depot.

The final group have built their project around creating sustainable eco friendly products to replace store bought items such as soap, candles, body scrub, face masks and many more!

If you have any old pieces of technology (eg. phones, computers, gaming consoles) you no longer need, we would love to give them a second life and recycle them in the right way! Please bring them into the Front Office and my students will collect them to ensure they are properly taken care of.

Running a restaurant

In our Passion Project, we are learning about all the aspects of running a restaurant. We have been having a restaurant in focus each week, specifically looking at areas in hospitality that employ people with disabilities (unfortunately most of these are in the USA).

unit_rest_3_Mobile_.jpgSo far, we have developed our menu and are conducting taste testing for quality control. To practice our taking of orders, we have re-established the unit’s Coffee Club to practice taking orders both in and outside of our classroom.

Our restaurant name is The Happy Belly and will be open for business in Week 9.

In Week 6, we are off to visit Sfera’s to see how a restaurant is set up and run and we will finish off the term with having lunch at Sfera’s practicing our manners and ordering from a menu. A big thank you for Sfera’s for letting us visit and spend time with them.

Animals

In our Passion Project, we have been learning about a variety of wild Australian animals. Each student chose an animal of interest to study and make a poster or PowerPoint. Once they have finished their research, our students made a model of their animals.

The students chose to learn about spiders, Australian Children’s Python, Tasmanian Devil and a Blue Wren.

Bushwalking

bushwalking_Mobile_.jpg

Students in Bushwalking have been researching local parks in 5096 (The Paddocks and Cobblers Creek). Students have watched videos so they can identify the tracks they will be hiking on and determine the distance, fitness level and time to successfully complete the trails. Our students are now looking forward to getting out in nature and taking some photos while we are out and about!
